HUMAN LIKE YOU
OCTOBER 27 - NOVEMBER 12
BACKWOODS, MELBOURNE / NAARM
5/25 EASY ST, COLLINGWOOD, VIC
OPENING, OCTOBER 27, 6-9PM
A show channeling the beauty and the chaos of the world and reminding humans of our place within that. Small’s work swings from joyful celebration to the activist statements of the large work ‘Assume Nothing’. The abstract figures seen throughout Smalls work and this show are his own reflections on queer life, while the abstract halftone works; a series of 8 works that reflect a less literal view but manifest in the same chaos.
The exhibition revolves around this basic concept of ‘Human Like You’. The world is getting bigger and bigger and more complex than ever. It’s easy to get consumed by it and forget at the base of everything we are Human. Of course our world is so deverse and celebrates so many cultures and identites. These are the things that are important in the world. Through this show I hope to remind people of the importance of being human. To feel it, to experience the world and nature in a real, tangible way. To treat others with the kindness and empathy that other humans deserve. I also want to remind people that humans come from nature and are a part of it as apposed to a controller of it. This concept has formed the basis of Small's work for most of 2023 and had seen him show versions of this work in London & New York.
